Overview of X (Formerly Twitter)

Branding Your X Page

Branding Your X Page

You’ve created your X account, added a profile image and bio, and started looking around to see what others are posting to get a feel for the messaging. Before you get too active on X, take time to complete the design of your account page.

X doesn’t offer a lot of options for customizing your account page, but you should take advantage of the options they offer to better showcase your brand. The main design feature on X is a header or banner image that appears on the top of your account page.

Choose an image that provides a clear impression of your company such as a photo of your employees or a collage of your products. Consider how the header matches up with your profile image, particularly where the profile image overlaps with it on both desktop and mobile screens. Header graphics should be 1500x500 pixels. Profile photos should be 400x400 pixels.

Deciding what images to use for your X header and profile images depends on what impression you’re trying to make, what message you want to convey, and what imagery you have at your disposal or can create.

Some things you could use to brand your X page include:

  1. Photographs. A professional, properly lit, and strategically composed photograph can personalize your account page and make a positive first impression. Consider using a photo featuring your team members, products, headquarters, or another representative image. You can also create a collage consisting of several images to showcase different aspects of your business.
  2. Company logo. While you can use your company logo as your profile image or your header image, don’t use it for both unless they are part of an overall design. Not all company logos translate well as a header image, and some aren’t legible as a profile image viewed on a mobile device. Consider strategically placing your logo on the header design if you’re not using it in your profile image.
  3. An illustration. Not all header or profile images need to be photographs or logos. Other illustrated graphics can make for a compelling design. Depending on the image you are trying to project, you could feature a fun, cartoon version of your team or illustrated versions of your products.
  4. Words. Some header images include a tagline or other phrase or quote as text directly over a photograph, image, or colored background. Double check how the text looks on a small screen and if it is still visible when the profile image overlaps the header image on mobile devices.

To upload a header image, click on the Edit Profile button, then click on the camera icon at the top of your account page. Header and profile graphics can be either JPEG or PNG files, however, you might find that PNG files will appear crisper than JPEGs. Use the recommended dimensions as smaller images may appear blurry and images with different dimensions might appear distorted.

To modify your profile image, click the camera icon on the profile image square space then upload the image you want to use. Because the profile image appears within a circle, you may need to reposition your logo in the center of a square-shaped graphic file so it isn’t cut off on either side.

You can change your X header or profile image any time to highlight special events or promotions or to reflect the seasons and holidays. While you can use the same imagery on other social networks that you’re using on X for consistent branding, keep in mind that the file sizes and dimensions will be different.

Other than picking two images to brand your X page, the only other real option for visual customization is picking a color theme, however that feature is only available on Premium accounts at a cost of $7 per month or $84 annually. If you opt to pay for Premium X, choose a color combination that aligns as closely as possible to your brand colors.

The rest of your X page branding relies on the content you post. If you are creating custom images or videos, add your logo, brand colors, or other design elements to some or all of the visuals you’re using to create an overall cohesive look.

The last thing to consider when customizing your X page is whether or not to pay to become a Verified Organization. This fee-based subscription costs $200 per month or $2,000 per year and is represented by a blue checkmark at the top of your page.

Because this kind of verification is purchased and not dependent on any credentials, it doesn’t carry the same meaning as the original Twitter verified account check mark. However, it is an option for smaller businesses and comes with some ad credits and priority support.
